Performing Doreens No-Brainer Lectures @ Ed Fringe, 2018
ABOUT ME
As a child, I used to write long letters to my friends and loved my English lessons best of all. At uni though, the need to produce endless essays took away the pleasure of writing. It wasn't until the birth of my fourth child in 1999, that it started to come back, and I would stay up half the night, powered by excitement, writing my first novel. Since then, I have never really stopped having constant ideas for new stories and thereby tussling with words deep into the night.
I often transpose a story into a play or screen-play to see how it would work. I like watching plays and fringe theatre: the immediacy and communality of it inspire me to create for the promise of a living, breathing, waiting audience.
Being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 thrust me into the world of blogging with The Breast Blog in the World, and from that new creative energy came many new writing projects: The Adventures of the Gin Club, The World According to Shardonnay, Wantababy, Private Parts, Pearly and countless other stories, sketches, plays.... and of course, Doreens No-Brainer Lectures!
A new job as coach with the RDA (Riding for the Disabled) in 2013 meant I met a new group of people at Brook Cottage Farm. My experiences there led to the creation of several pantomimes for the Furneux Pelham Players, a whole theatre festival called Theatre in the Fields, and the stories and stage play of The Adventures of the Padded Saddle Club.
There is no more fun to be had than when you are in the middle of a creative project. I want every day of my life to be spent with ideas, words and wild designs.
